Chervona is an East European Party band from Portland, OR, known for their energetic mix of traditional East European music and modern genres. They have been performing for over fifteen years all throughout the Pacific Northwest and down the West Coast. The group was started by Andre Temkin, who moved to Portland from St. Petersburg, Russia and connected with other musicians in the area, including Roman Tchamsky and Andrew Alikhanov, both also Russian immigrants. Over the years, the lineup has grown to include members with roots from all over the world, making Chervona a truly international ensemble.
Their colorful music, personalities, and cultural influences are encapsulated in their name “Chevrona,” which in Ukrainian and Polish means “red” and/or “beautiful.” Their music draws from Russian, Ukrainian, Romani, and Klezmer traditions, but they are not afraid to blend in ska, punk, jazz, polka, and disco, creating a sound that feels like a little bit of everything, a sound that makes you want to dance. Their setlists include both original songs and revamped traditional classics from the late 19th century, performed in several languages.
Chervona’s live shows are legendary for their energy and flair. They have played a wide range of venues from small clubs to major festivals like the Oregon Country Fair, the Northwest Folklife Festival, and Vancouver’s Under the Volcano Festival. They have also shared the stage with big names like Manu Chao, Gogol Bordello, the Decemberists, and Pink Martini.
Beyond just performing, Chervona is active in the community, participating in charity events and local celebrations. Chervona always brings a party vibe, turning every show into a wild, dance-filled celebration that brings people together through music.
